Wine For the Weekend of 9/6/19
French Chenin Blanc
Chenin blanc is the wine for the weekend of 9/6/19. One of the most popular versions is called Vouvray. This is one of the first white wines I ever had at a small New Orleans inspired restaurant in Philadelphia called Cafe Nola. As of today it no longer exists, but the wine does. It’s from the Loire Valley in France. Later, I discovered a wine by Robert Mondavi called chenin blanc. I fell in love with it, then I discovered that they no longer make it. Imagine my surprise when I found out that it was the principal grape used in making Vouvray! There are two other great wines from France made from chenin blanc called Savennieres and Montlouis.
Other Chenin Blancs
Chenin blanc is grown in many other countries including South Africa, Australia, Spain, and various states in the U.S. However, South Africa has taken the lead with it. It is called Steen there. Also, California has decreased their chenin blanc acreage over the years. Considering the quality of wine, they are very affordable. Find them for $10 or less!
