Priorat
If you like merlot or shiraz, then you will love Grenache. Or, Garnacha as the Spanish refer to it. In Sardinia (Sardegna), Italy, it is called Cannonau. And in Spain, it is the primary grape in the Priorat wine region. Priorat is a dynamic wine region in north-eastern Spain. And, its intense, full-bodied red wines have shot to fame in the past few decades. The classic Priorat wine is made from old-vine Garnacha and blended with Carinena. And, it has concentrated aromas of licorice, tar and brandied cherries. Also, Priorat is located in the larger Cataluna region. And, Garnacha is used as a blending grape in many other areas as well.
Red Priorat Wine
Red Priorat wine is exceptional in three key regards. First, it is one of a very few world-class wine styles to be based on Grenache. And, it is a category in which it is joined only by Chateauneuf-du-Pape and the top-end wines from California’s Sine Qua Non winery. Second, it is one of only two styles to hold Spain’s top-tier DOC classification (the other being Rioja). And third, it has risen from being almost unheard of on the international wine market to being one of the world’s most expensive wines.

We love Garnacha and many of those from Priorat but we have taken a very special liking to a Conde de Artoiz Vermouth de Garnacha. Made from late harvest 80 year old Garnacha vines infused with meadow herbs and aged 2 years in barrel before bottling. The balance of ripe fruit fresh herbs and a hint of bitters leaves us always wanting more.
Hi Larry. That’s a new one for me. Very cool indeed! Do you drink it chilled? Do you eat certain foods with it? Thanks for the comment! Frank.
We recommend it on the rocks with a large slice of Orange peel. I frequently have a glass before preparing dinner. When my wife isn’t looking I sometimes mix it 4 parts Vermouth 1 part Gin with a sprig of rosemary.
Nice! I’ll never tell her. LOL
