Grenache Wine Is The Red That Pleases Everyone
Grenache Aromas and Tastes
Why Grenache Wine Is The Red That Pleases Everyone. France and Australia use Grenache mostly as a blending grape. Spain makes Grenache wines that are blends or 100%. Italy makes wines that are 100% Grenache. In Spain, it is Garnacha. And, Italians call it Cannonau. Grenache has aromas of orange rinds and ruby-red grapefruit. In Europe, it has herbal notes of dried oregano and tobacco. Grenache has flavors of stewed strawberries, plum, orange, cinnamon and herbs. The bottom line is that it is one of the easiest reds to drink.
Food Pairings
Grenache pairs perfectly with grilled, stewed and braised meats like beef, veal, pork, chicken and game. It holds up well to hearty dishes, and it is a good match for less spicy styles of Asian cooking. My favorite pairing is ham with Rosemount Estate grenache shiraz blend..
Grenache in France
In France, Grenache is a blending grape. It is one of the primary grapes in Chateauneuf du Pape. This is one of my favorite wines and wine regions. It permits 13 red and white grape varieties. The bottles have molded glass emblems which are called cartouches. In the medieval times, the pope fled Italy and settled in this area. Chateauneuf du Pape translates into the Papal residence or house of the pope. It is expensive at a minimum of $30 to three digits. Other popular wines are Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Cote du Rhone. Some of these are less expensive and delicious. Also, the up and coming Languedoc region uses it for reds and Rosés. Many of the reasonably priced French Rosés are from there.

Grenache From Other Countries
Spain is number two in Grenache (Garnache) production. They blend it with Tempranillo and make 100% Grenache wines as well. Italy makes 100% Grenache (Cannonau) on the island of Sardegna (Sardinia). And, Australia usually blends it with Syrah (Shiraz) and Mourvedre. They call it GSM. Because it thrives in warm climates, California makes good Grenache.
