Dive Into The Great White Wines Of Campania
Falanghina
Dive Into The Great White Wines Of Campania. I hear people say that they only like red wine too often. Perhaps they never had the great whites of Campania. Or they never had a food that went with their white wine properly. In addition to their outstanding reds, Campania is loaded with delicious white wines. Give me a good Falanghina with seafood any day of the week. It is known to have a citrus smell. It tastes of apples, pears and minerals. However, the secret for all of these wines is the high acidity which gives a long lasting finish on the palate.
Greco di Tufo “Great Whites Of Campania”
If you find yourself saying that you never heard of these wines, then don’t be surprised. These are some hidden gems of which Italy has many. One of the best producers is Feudi di San Gregorio. They make a version of each of these wines. Greco di Tufo smells like citrus and herbs, whereas it tastes like citrus, stone fruit and/or minerals. It is referred to as just Greco.
Fiano di Avellino “Great Whites of Campania”
Another of the great whites of Campania is Fiano di Avellino. Fiano has smells that are nutty, floral and honey-like. It tastes like spice and tropical fruit such as pineapple. I still don’t understand why these aren’t common names in American households. We tend to drink whatever California sends our way. And that saddens me.
Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio
Lacryma Christi is translated as the “Tears of Christ”. It’s grown near Mt. Vesuvius. The bianco (white) version is made mostly with Verdeca and Coda di Volpe grapes. However, it’s the volcanic soil that gives this wine it’s flavors. There is a red version of this as well made primarily of Piedirosso and Sciascinoso grapes. This wine offers aromas of tree fruits complemented by undertones of white peach and licorice. On the palate, you may taste stone fruits and some nice minerals to complement your seafood dishes.
