Wine and Chocolate Trivia
Which of these wines does NOT go with milk chocolate?
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Malbec
- Merlot
- Ruby Port
- Syrah
- Zinfandel
Answer
Surprisingly, merlot clashes with milk chocolate. Many people do not realize that merlot has a rare character not found in most wines. If you look for it, you might find it. Take a whiff of merlot with one nostril at the edge of the glass and one nostril outside of it. Barely perceptible, the smell of bacon fat is faint. Merlot has a fatty character. That and the milk fat cancel each other out. The result is a glass of merlot stripped of its flavor. Now, it tastes terrible. My favorite match is Cabernet Sauvignon. Somehow, the the chocolate mixes nicely and intensifies the berry flavors. It is a great lesson in wine and food pairing that you can do with your friends.
